Advanced Imaging Newport Coast uses a Toshiba ultrasound system for ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Like Open MRI, ultrasound imaging does not use ionizing radiation (x-ray), which is part of a computed tomography (CT) scan. Ultrasound imaging is usually a painless medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
Ultrasound images are captured in real-time and show the structure of the body’s organs as well as any movement that may occur during the exam. The ability to detect movement can be used to evaluate blood flowing through blood vessels. A Doppler ultrasound may be used during your ultrasound examination, and shows the direction of movement. This is helpful in evaluating blood flow in arteries.
Ultrasound imaging is used to examine many of the body’s organs, including the thyroid, heart, blood vesssels, liver, spleen, gallbladder, pancreas, uterus, and ovaries. Ultrasound imaging is also frequently used to evaluate an unborn child (fetus) in patients who are pregnant. Ultrasound imaging is frequently used in fetal evaluation because there are no x-rays used, which may be harmful to the fetus.

How is the procedure performed?
Upon arrival at our office, you will be given forms to complete. After completing the forms, you will go to the ultrasound suite and positioned on a table. A clear gel will be applied to the area being studied, and an ultrasound technologist will then perform the exam by pressing a transducer (a small plastic detector that is used to generate images) over the area of interest. Images will be immediately seen on the monitor and stored for review by a radiologist at our facility. After the exam, the gel will be wiped off of the skin and you are free to leave. The exam is generally fast, painless, and easy, and should be completed within an hour. You will be able to resume your normal activity immediately after the exam.
